The Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that effective March 19 the U.S. has imposed a prohibition on the following.
- the commercial import or introduction from the sea of CITES-listed specimens from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Laos or Nigeria
- the commercial export or reexport of CITES-listed specimens to the DRC, Laos or Nigeria
- the commercial import of CITES-listed specimens with a country of origin of the DRC, Laos or Nigeria when such specimens were exported from the restricted country of origin on or after March 19
The FWS is taking these measures because these countries have failed to file a national ivory action plan, as required by a decision of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) member countries in July 2014.
