The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 5.5 billion square meter equivalents in May, up 11.1 percent from April and 3.7 percent from May 2016. Textile imports totaled 3.35 billion SME, up 12.4 percent for the month and 3.8 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.14 billion SME were up 8.6 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively.
Overall Imports. Total year-to-date imports were 25.1 billion SME, up 2.6 percent from the previous year, as textile imports gained 2.7 percent to 14.6 billion SME and apparel imports rose 2.5 percent to 10.5 billion SME.
For the year ending in May imports were 63.6 billion SME, up 0.6 percent from a year earlier, as textile imports increased 1.2 percent to 36.4 billion SME and apparel imports slipped 0.4 percent to 27.2 billion SME.
