Background

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 5.16 billion square meter equivalents in December 2019, down 2.8 percent from November and 6.5 percent from December 2018. Textile imports totaled 3.25 billion SME, down 6.6 percent for the month and 5.1 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 1.91 billion SME were up 4.4 percent from November but down 8.7 percent from a year before.

Overall Imports. For all of 2019 imports were 69.8 billion SME, up 1.9 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports increased 3.5 percent to 42.1 billion SME but apparel imports fell 0.3 percent to 27.7 billion SME.
