The State Department is accepting comments through March 9 on an application from the California Department of Transportation for a presidential permit authorizing the construction, connection, operation, and maintenance of a new border crossing to serve the San Diego, Calif., and Tijuana, Baja California, areas. State notes that the proposed Otay Mesa East port of entry could alleviate strain on the existing ports of entry and the local and regional transportation infrastructure. U.S. and Mexican officials have previously said that this facility “aims to be the port of entry of the future and a new paradigm for binational planning.”
