Background

U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker recently announced the launch of a new program aimed at addressing barriers to online trade while reflecting the role of the Internet as a global platform for communication, commerce, individual expression and innovation. Under the Digital Attaché program members of the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service will provide support and assistance to help U.S. businesses successfully navigate digital policy and regulatory issues in foreign markets and expand exports through global e-commerce channels. The new program will be led by the International Trade Administration in collaboration with bureaus across the DOC, the State Department and industry stakeholders.

The DOC notes that this initiative will enhance efforts to advance commercial diplomacy, drive policy advocacy on technology issues, ensure linkages between trade policy and trade promotion efforts, and provide frontline assistance for U.S. small- and medium-sized enterprises to take advantage of the robust e-commerce channels.
