U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports that on April 27 it deployed an optional perishable goods indicator that will allow filers to electronically mark the cargo release submission as covering perishable goods. CBP states that the presence of the PER indicator will enable the Automated Commercial Environment to bring the shipment’s status as perishable to the attention of CBP at the port of entry. However, the submission of this indicator has no effect on system processing of the cargo release transaction and its presence does not append or supersede existing CBP policy with respect to the handling of perishable shipments.
