Background

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has announced a new partnership aimed at facilitating commercial truck processing at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas, reportedly the busiest commercial crossing in the U.S.

CBP states that the current port layout and the high volume of commercial truck traffic at the World Trade Bridge cause severe bottlenecking that stretches into Mexico. In response, under CBP’s Donations Acceptance Program, CBP, the City of Laredo, and the General Services Administration will construct four Free and Secure Trade lanes at this bridge over the next 15 to 18 months, and the City of Laredo will outfit the lanes with the necessary infrastructure and technology. These lanes will reduce wait times by diverting pre-approved, low-risk commercial carriers to designated lanes for expedited processing.

The DAP allows CBP to accept donations of real property, personal property (including monetary donations), and non-personal services from private-sector and government entities for port of entry construction, alterations, operations, and maintenance activities.
