Background

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has announced that as part of its Donations Acceptance Program a major U.S. company is donating proprietary technology to aid in authenticating a variety of the company’s goods and preventing counterfeit products from entering the U.S. This tool will be tested at a limited number of international mail and express consignment facilities.

CBP states that it has developed a “proactive, aggressive and dynamic enforcement approach” to intellectual property rights enforcement that in fiscal year 2020 resulted in the seizure of 26,503 shipments of counterfeit goods that would have been worth nearly $1.3 billion had they been genuine. However, CBP adds that its enforcement efforts are strengthened by stakeholder collaboration and innovative approaches such as the newly-announced partnership.
