Background

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 6.83 billion square meter equivalents in November 2020, down 8.4 percent from October but up 28.8 percent from November 2019. Textile imports totaled 4.82 billion SME, down 2.4 percent for the month but up 38.9 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.00 billion SME were down 20.6 percent from October but up 9.5 percent from a year before.

Overall Imports. Total year-to-date imports were 61.0 billion SME, down 5.3 percent from the previous year, as textile imports rose 2.8 percent to 39.8 billion SME but apparel imports plunged 17.5 percent to 21.3 billion SME.

For the year ending in November, imports were 66.2 billion SME, down 5.3 percent from a year earlier, as textile imports gained 2.2 percent to 43.0 billion SME but apparel imports sank 16.8 percent to 23.2 billion SME.
