Medical Items. The Registration of Certain Foreign Establishments Act (S. 3449, introduced Jan. 10 by Sen. Peters, D-Mich.) would require foreign establishments engaged in the manufacture, preparation, propagation, compounding, or processing of a drug or medical device to register with the Food and Drug Administration regardless of whether the drug or device undergoes further manufacture, preparation, propagation, compounding, or processing at a separate establishment outside the U.S. prior to being imported into the U.S.

S. 3509 (introduced Jan. 13 by Sen. Braun, R-Ind.) would strengthen the authority of the FDA with respect to foreign drug facility inspections.

Bear Products Trade. The Bear Poaching Elimination Act (S. 3472, introduced Jan. 11 by Sen. Kennedy, R-La. and Sen. Duckworth, D-Ill.) would prohibit the importation, exportation, and interstate trade of bear viscera and items, products, or substances containing, or labeled or advertised as containing, bear viscera.
