Just days after announcing that importers could submit individual requests for duty payment delays in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has reversed course and said it is no longer accepting such requests. CBP states that it may allow additional days for such payments for narrow circumstances, including a physical inability to file entry or payments, due to technology outages or port closures.

For those who submitted a duty payment delay request in writing in response to its previous message, CBP states that single payments and daily and periodic monthly statement payments of estimated duties, taxes, and fees that should have been tendered from March 20 through March 26 must be initiated via FedWire or Automated Clearinghouse credit by March 27.

CBP states that it is continuing to work with federal and private-sector partners to identify appropriate mechanisms to manage the operational impacts of COVID-19.
