UK appoints North American trade commissioner
The appointment of Antony Phillipson, currently UK director-general of international trade for North America, “comes in the midst of the UK revamping its trade personnel structure in preparation for Brexit and a host of trade deals expected to be negotiated after the country regains full economic autonomy.”
UK, China to hold joint trade and investment review
The review will be “the first step toward delivering an ambitious future trade agreement after Brexit.” The two sides also “agreed to hold more talks on China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.”
India raises customs duty on mobile phones
The increase from 15 percent to 20 percent is designed to “boost local value addition in domestic electronics manufacturing.”
First railroad joins blockchain group
BNSF joins hundreds of other members of the Blockchain in Transport Alliance that “are working to define what data goes into the freight transportation blockchain, how that data is formatted, how the data is structured, and in what cases blockchain would be used.”
Smart and Secure Trade Lanes gain momentum
The “World Customs Organization-backed custom-to-customs pilot project … has already brought down customs clearance times and increased predictability in the maritime supply chain through close cooperation between customs in countries including China, the Netherlands, Spain, and Poland.” The program has recently expanded to air freight.
