Commission imposes definitive safeguard measures on imports of steel products
“The measures concern 26 steel product categories and consist of tariff-rate quotas above which a duty of 25% will apply. The tariff rate quotas fully preserve the traditional levels of imports into the EU and will be increased progressively. This system is similar to the provisional measures currently in place, with some important modifications that minimise trade disruptions and preserve traditional trade arrangements in terms of quantities and origins.”
East African nations approve individual trade pacts with EU if joint deal not reached
“The East African Community (EAC) and the EU have been at loggerheads for years over signing the so-called Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), designed to replace preferential trade deals struck down by the World Trade Organization. … Kenya and Rwanda signed the agreement in 2016 but it needs approval from all other members of the EAC bloc - Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan and Burundi - to take effect.”
Ethiopia approves continental free trade deal
“The bill now referred to the national parliament is expected to be approved in the coming weeks. Spearhead by the African Union Commission, the AfCFTA was signed 44 member state of the Union in Kigali last March. For the agreement to go fully operational, at least half of the total signatories have to approve by their respective national parliaments before March 2019. So far about a dozen countries including Kenya, Rwanda and Ghana have passed the bill in their national legislative bodies. In addition the total number of signatory countries of the protocol has also reached around 50.”
