India mulls new category to impose import duties on hi-tech products
“New Delhi had imposed customs duty on smartphones from July 1, 2017 and subsequently on some inputs as well. However, there have been protests from countries such as Japan disputing imposition of these duties. A review of the tariff structure to introduce new lines would ring-fence India from protests that can be taken to the WTO, say experts.”
Colombia gets help modernizing trade practices
“Colombia’s project will see the establishment of a new center for trade facilitation and good practices managed by DIAN [the National Directorate of Taxes and Customs], which will issue advance rulings on classification, valuation and origin of goods before they arrive at borders … The center initially will focus on the automotive industry, an important economic sector for Colombia, and it will house a team with specialized knowledge and understanding of vehicle assembly companies and exporters.”
Uzbekistan to pursue expanded trade preferences from EU
“Currently, the republic enjoys the basic Generalized System of Preferences, according to which the country can export 3,000 commodity items without customs duties and 3,200 commodity positions at reduced rates to the EU … In case of being granted tariff preferences within the framework of GSP+, Uzbekistan will get duty-free access to more than 6,200 commodity items.”
