China customs expands checks on U.S. fruit imports

“Since Monday, all U.S.-originated fruit shipments have been subject to up to seven days of quarantine check on arrival in Shenzhen, said an industry source based at the port in China’s south. Previously, customs officers in China had let shipments through while they conducted sample checks.”


China halts all U.S. scrap imports for one month

“This is the latest, and perhaps most direct, escalation in China's crackdown on the scrap trade since its initial ban of 24 select categories in July 2017. In the months since, the country's new 0.5% contamination standard for all materials, and ban on mixed paper and plastics, has roiled recycling markets around the world.”

EU considers quotas to settle U.S. tariff threat

“A condition for such a deal would be that any U.S. limits on steel and aluminum from the 28-nation bloc be set at levels no lower than its 2017 shipments to the American market, the officials in Brussels said on condition of anonymity. … The EU would still reserve its right to seek arbitration and possible retaliation within the rules of the World Trade Organization, but a moderate response could buy the bloc time until November, when the U.S. has mid-term elections that could change the political calculus in Washington, according to one of the officials.”
