Background

The Department of Justice reports that an importer and two associated individuals (an executive and an agent) have agreed to pay $275,000 to settle charges that they violated the False Claims Act by improperly evading antidumping duties on wooden bedroom furniture from China. This settlement resolves allegations that between 2009 and 2014 the defendants misclassified the furniture as non-bedroom furniture on its official import documents. At the time wooden bedroom furniture from China was subject to a 216 percent AD duty while non-bedroom furniture was not subject to any AD duties.
