The Fish and Wildlife Service reports that there has been a reoccurring issue with respect to which government agency – the FWS or the Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service – provides inspection, validation of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora permits, and clearance for imports and exports that contain both CITES-listed plant species and either CITES-listed or non-CITES-listed wildlife species.
As a result, effective immediately and until further notice, FWS and APHIS have reached an agreement under which FWS wildlife inspectors will do the following for such shipments.
- for imports: inspect and clear shipments of products containing both CITES-listed non-living
plant species and any wildlife species that may be either CITES-listed or non-CITES-listed
- for export: inspect and clear, including validation of CITES documents, shipments of products containing both CITES-listed non-living plant species and any wildlife species, whether CITES-listed and non-CITES-listed
