Background

The Foreign-Trade Zones Board is accepting comments through Dec. 29 on the following.

- The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, grantee of FTZ 78, is requesting to expand subzone 78A at the Nissan North America Inc. facility in Smyrna, Tenn., to include 22 additional acres adjacent to the present site 1. No authorization for additional production activity has been requested at this time.

- The Port of Portland, grantee of FTZ 45, has submitted a notification of proposed production activity at the Lam Research Corporation facilities in Tualatin and Sherwood, Ore., which are used for the production of semiconductor production equipment, subassemblies and related parts. Production under FTZ procedures could exempt Lam from customs duty payments on foreign-status components used in export production, and on its domestic sales Lam would be able to choose the duty rate that applies to semiconductor production equipment, subassemblies and related parts (zero) for foreign-status inputs. Customs duties also could possibly be deferred or reduced on foreign-status production equipment.

The FTZ Board has also approved the expansion of subzone 77E at the Cummins Inc. facilities in Memphis, Tenn.
