The Federal Maritime Commission announced April 15 that FMC Commissioner Mario Cordero will be leaving the agency May 12 to take the position of executive director of the Port of Long Beach in California. Cordero served as a commissioner on the Port of Long Beach Harbor Commission from 2003 until his confirmation as an FMC commissioner in June 2011. He was elevated to FMC chairman in April 2013, where he served until January 2017.
As executive director Cordero will be responsible for the daily leadership of the second-busiest container port in the U.S. A Long Beach Press-Telegram article notes that Cordero will be the port’s fourth chief in the last six years and will face an array of challenges, including shipping line consolidation, infrastructure needs, and congestion.
