Imports of textiles and apparel saw a small increase in December but were up more than a third for all of 2021, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel. The data indicate that shipments from traditional suppliers slipped somewhat while imports from some historically underutilized sources saw sharp increases.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 9.0 billion square meter equivalents in December 2021, up just 0.6 percent from November 2021 but 42.7 percent from December 2020. Textile imports totaled 6.49 billion SME, down 0.8 percent for the month but up 46.6 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.51 billion SME were unchanged from November but up 33.7 percent from a year before.
Total imports for 2021 were 94.3 billion SME, up 39.4 percent from the previous year, as textile imports jumped 45.6 percent to 64.8 billion SME and apparel imports rose 27.4 percent to 29.5 billion SME.
