Background

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has issued a final rule adjusting for inflation the amounts the agency can assess as civil monetary penalties for (1) transporting passengers coastwide for hire by certain vessels (known as Bowaters vessels) that do not meet specific conditions (penalty has been adjusted from $200 to $500), and (2) employing a vessel in a trade without a required certificate of documentation (penalty has been adjusted from $500 to $1,250).

Other CBP civil penalty amounts were previously adjusted pursuant to the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act Improvements Act of 2015 but the adjustments for the two civil penalties at hand were inadvertently left out.
