Canada’s Department of Finance has updated its lists of products eligible for remission of the 25 percent surtax on U.S.-origin steel products and the 10 percent surtax on U.S.-origin aluminum products that were imposed in retaliation for U.S. tariff increases on similar goods. The department states that these changes, which result in the net addition of goods eligible for relief, are intended to protect the competitiveness of businesses affected by the surtaxes.
- There are now 168 steel and aluminum products for which relief has been granted for an indefinite period when imported from the U.S. on or after July 1, 2018.
- Relief for 46 steel and aluminum products imported from the U.S. on or after July 1, 2018, has been extended to April 30, 2019.
- Relief for 219 steel and aluminum products imported from the U.S. is limited to specifically listed importers for specified periods.
- Relief for six products not of steel or aluminum that are imported from the U.S. on or after July 1, 2018, is available for an indefinite period.
For eligible products, importers can file for refunds of surtaxes paid since July 1, 2018, and through any applicable end date. Claims must be accompanied by all relevant documents and be made within two years after the date of importation.
