Beer brewers and importers will voluntarily include a serving facts statement on their products under a voluntary initiative announced recently by the Beer Institute. Participating companies will also disclose ingredients on either the label or secondary packaging.

According to a BI press release, brewers and importers participating in the Brewers’ Voluntary Disclosure Initiative will (1) voluntarily list calories, carbohydrates, protein, fat and alcohol by volume on all beer product labels in the form of a serving facts statement consistent with Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau ruling 2013-2, (2) disclose product ingredients on either the label or secondary packaging via a list of ingredients, a reference to a website or a QR code, and (3) clearly display a freshness date or date of production on all labels or primary containers.

BI member companies, which together produce more than 81 percent of the volume of beer sold in the U.S., have agreed to follow these standards. The press release notes that participating brewers and importers are being encouraged to achieve compliance across their product lines by the end of 2020.
