The Food and Drug Administration is accepting comments through Jan. 14 on a petition to withdraw authorization for the use of 26 ortho-phthalates in various food contact applications because these uses have been permanently abandoned. These substances are used in adhesives, resinous and polymeric coatings, components of paper and paperboard in contact with foods, acrylic and modified acrylic plastics, cellophane, closures with sealing gaskets, melamine-formaldehyde resins, polyester elastomers, rubber articles, plasticizers, and surface lubricants. If this petition is granted, none of these substances would be authorized for food additive use.
