The Department of Agriculture has announced a phased reopening of southern border ports of entry to cattle trade. Beginning Aug. 24 USDA will open the Douglas, Ariz., port of entry to such trade while simultaneously initiating the operational steps necessary for subsequent openings at the Santa Teresa, N.M., and Columbus, N.M., ports. USDA states that every animal entering the U.S. through these ports will undergo a full USDA inspection to ensure it is free of any signs of new world screwworm. The reopening timeline may be adjusted based on Mexico’s progress in meeting milestones under an NWS joint action plan and addressing critical issues.
Poultry
Effective July 24 USDA removed restrictions on imports of poultry and related products originating from or transiting zone PCZ-318 in Saskatchewan, Canada, that had been imposed due to concerns about highly-pathogenic avian influenza. Only one zone in Canada still remains subject to these restrictions.
Apples and Pears
USDA is accepting comments through Aug. 29 on a draft pest risk assessment regarding a request from the government of New Zealand to modify its access to the U.S. market for apples and pears by authorizing a new hybrid pear species and allowing stems and leaves on all exported fruit.
