President Trump has announced his intention to nominate Jeffrey Gerrish as deputy U.S. trade representative for Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and industrial competitiveness. A White House press release states that Gerrish has “extensive experience litigating trade disputes before the Department of Commerce, International Trade Commission, federal courts, North American Free Trade Agreement binational panels and the World Trade Organization.” Press reports note that in private practice Gerrish, like two of his former colleagues at his current firm who have already been confirmed to senior USTR positions, has done substantial work on behalf of U.S. steel companies.
