Background

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 5.81 billion square meter equivalents in February 2021, down 6.6 percent from January 2021 but up 21.5 percent from February 2020. Textile imports totaled 3.74 billion SME, down 8.3 percent for the month but up 34.7 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.07 billion SME were down 2.8 percent from January but up 3.2 percent from a year before.

Overall Imports. Total year-to-date imports were 12.0 billion SME, up 14.9 percent from the previous year, as textile imports rose 27.1 percent to 7.82 billion SME but apparel imports lost 2.6 percent to 4.20 billion SME.

For the year ending in February, imports were 68.9 billion SME, up 0.6 percent from the previous year. Textile imports rose 10.9 percent to 45.9 billion SME but apparel imports fell 15.1 percent to 23.0 billion SME.
