Background

Imports of textiles and apparel saw monthly and annual gains in March as shipments from non-traditional suppliers continued to surge, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 9.37 billion square meter equivalents in March 2022, up 15.8 percent from February and 39.0 percent from March 2021. Textile imports totaled 6.26 billion SME, up 4.3 percent for the month and 47.4 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 3.11 billion SME were up 18.3 percent from February and 24.8 percent from a year before.

Total year-to-date imports were 26.1 billion SME, up 39.0 percent from the previous year, as textile imports jumped 46.9 percent to 17.7 billion SME and apparel imports rose 24.7 percent to 8.35 billion SME.

Total imports for the year ending in March 2022 were 101.6 billion SME, up 42.3 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports gained 48.1 percent to 70.5 billion SME while apparel imports rose 30.7 percent to 31.1 billion SME.
