China. A broad bill intended to improve U.S. competitiveness against China, which includes a number of trade-related measures, is beginning to make its way through the Senate. Click here for more information.
Tariffs. The Trade Preferences and American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act (introduced May 18 by Sen. Wyden, D-Ore.) would update and reauthorize the Generalized System of Preferences and the miscellaneous trade bill. Click here for more information.
Cuba. The Freedom to Export to Cuba Act (S. 1694, introduced May 19 by Sens. Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Moran, R-Kansas) would repeal the current legal restrictions against doing business with Cuba, including the original 1961 authorization for establishing the trade embargo, subsequent laws that required enforcement of the embargo, and other restrictive statutes that prohibit transactions between U.S.-owned or -controlled firms and Cuba. This bill would also repeal limitations on direct shipping between U.S. and Cuban ports.
IPR. The Preventing Foreign Attempts to Erode Healthcare Innovation Act (S. 1683, introduced May 18 by Sen. Scott, R-S.C.) would prohibit the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative from supporting the waiver of certain World Trade Organization intellectual property protections for COVID-19 vaccines.
