Marisa Lago was sworn in Dec. 28 as under secretary of commerce for international trade. In this role she will head the International Trade Administration, which assists U.S. businesses entering or expanding into international markets, enforces fair trade laws, promotes U.S. products and services overseas, provides in-depth trade analyses, develops strategies that will shape the future of international trade, and engages in commercial diplomacy across the globe.
Lago served in the Obama administration as assistant secretary of the treasury for international markets and development, where she oversaw the U.S. government’s overseas development activities with the World Bank and its regional counterparts. She also directed the Treasury Department’s portfolio on international financial services regulation, climate finance, trade in financial services, and technical assistance to developing countries on public financial management.
Earlier in her career she headed the Office of International Affairs for the Securities and Exchange Commission, served as president and CEO of NYS Empire State Development, and was the chief economic development officer for the city of Boston.
