Cattle and Bison
The Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has issued a final rule that, effective Oct. 19, will establish the following in its regulations governing the importation of cattle and bison.
- a system to classify foreign regions as particular status levels for bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis
- provisions for modifying such classifications for a foreign region
- conditions for the importation of cattle and bison from regions with the various classifications
APHIS notes that the requirements for the importation of cattle and bison will not change significantly as a result of this rule and that where they do change they will affect very few importers or producers.
Fresh Figs from Mexico
Effective Sept. 15 APHIS implemented the following restrictions on all commercial consignments of fresh fig fruits imported from Mexico to prevent the introduction of Mediterranean black fig fly.
- consignments from areas in Mexico where MBFF is present must be treated with 400 gy irradiation
- consignments from areas in Mexico where MBFF is not present will continue to be treated with 150 gy irradiation but will now require a phytosanitary certificate with an additional declaration stating that the figs were produced in an area free of MBFF
- consignments currently produced in the fruit fly free area in Mexico must include a PC issued by Mexico’s national plant protection organization with an AD that the consignment was produced in an area free of MBFF
- fresh figs brought in by passengers and in non-commercial consignments are prohibited
