Background

The Bureau of Industry and Security has issued an order imposing a $55,000 civil penalty against a U.S. company to settle charges that it violated the Export Administration Regulations by exporting rifle scopes to Canada without seeking or obtaining the required export licenses. BIS states that the company knew or had reason to know that a license was required because, among other things, it had previously applied for and been granted a BIS license to export the same or similar items to Canada.

If the company does not pay the penalty in a full and timely manner, BIS may deny all of its export privileges for one year.
