Background

The Department of Transportation has awarded more than $220 million in funding under the Port Infrastructure Development Program to improve port facilities in 15 states and territories. This program aims to support efforts by ports and industry stakeholders to improve facility and freight infrastructure to meet present and future freight transportation needs.

Among the projects funded are the following.

- $9.9 million to improve an interchange that serves two container terminals in Los Angeles that handle about five percent of all waterborne containers entering and leaving the U.S.

- $13.2 million to construct an intermodal container transfer facility on-dock in Palm Beach, Fla., which will be capable of serving multiple berthed vessels simultaneously

- $9.9 million to help convert a former shipyard wharf to a modern cargo dock in Avondale, La., that will enable the Avondale Industrial Marine District port facility to handle dry bulk and breakbulk cargoes more effectively

- $9.9 million to add waterside access, create a bulk import and export terminal, install a modern gate complex, and upgrade the heavy-duty road network at Sparrows Point in Baltimore, Md.

- $9.9 million to provide regional access to the marine river network, rail, and highway transportation network in Kansas City, Mo.

- $16.1 million to add a new container gate and streamline container traffic flow in Wilmington, N.C.

- $19.5 million to help connect truck and rail freight to the port of Conneaut, a deep-water port on Lake Erie

- $14.5 million to support the development, expansion, and upgrade of a grain and bulk handling facility in Brownsville, Texas

- $20.2 million to construct eight working rail tracks and a center working area for transferring and staging containers in Norfolk, Va.
