Customs Communications, Investigations & Regulatory Audits
ST&R maintains an active and aggressive administrative law and customs audit practice. Our attorneys, many of whom started their careers as counsel for Customs & Border Protection, are experienced in representing clients in all types and stages of communications with government authorities. We regularly submit prospective ruling requests on behalf of clients, respond to CBP requests for information and notices of action (CF 28s and CF 29s), respond to penalty notices and liquidated damages claims, and use the resources provided by the customs regulations and afforded under the attorney-client privilege to assist our clients in instances where it is advisable to self-report possible violations. Our attorneys regularly file protests on behalf of clients to resolve disputes about adverse customs determinations and assist clients with preventing and, if necessary, resolving merchandise detentions and seizures.
We have former customs regulatory auditors on staff to assist with navigating clients through every stage of customs audits and investigations. Our select staff works closely with their government counterparts both in customs and in other government agencies to resolve issues and conflicts in favor of our clients’ interests in a timely and cost-effective manner.
