COLBERT LAM is Senior Advisor, Customs and International Trade, with Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg Ltd., resident in the Hong Kong office. Mr. Lam has spent two decades advising Fortune 100 companies at all stages of business development and investment in China and other Asia-Pacific markets on customs and international trade matters.
Prior to joining ST&R, Mr. Lam served as partner in the Asia-Pacific customs and trade practice of a major accounting firm for 20 years, where he was instrumental in building and training local teams in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. He advised companies on all strategic planning matters in China, from procurement to supply chain setup and logistics options, with a view to minimizing costs and taking advantage of trade programs in ASEAN countries, Japan, and Korea. He also assisted clients with customs clearance, audits and investigations, and other import and export matters throughout China. His in-depth understanding of China Customs helped companies anticipate and resolve a wide range of tariff and non-tariff issues.
Earlier in his career Mr. Lam spent five years with the Canada Customs and Excise Department, specializing in NAFTA enforcement. He also served as a professional accountant and auditor for a Canadian accounting firm, working on many transfer pricing projects and helping resolve customs valuation compliance issues.
Mr. Lam holds a bachelor of commerce degree from McMaster University and is a chartered professional accountant in British Columbia. He is fluent in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese.
