Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg Trade Report

The Department of Agriculture’s Plant Protection and Quarantine division has announced that the vacuum fumigation chamber located at the Miami (Fla.) plant inspection station will be decommissioned Feb. 17. PPQ points out that 99% of the fumigations performed in this chamber do not require a vacuum but are done in natural atmospheric pressure, which the approved fumigation contractors nearby have the equipment for. PPQ also notes that the annual cost of maintaining the chamber is substantial, removal of the equipment will increase warehouse space, and the PPQ facility will be a safer work environment without methyl bromide gas stored and used in it.
