Textile and Apparel Imports Fall as Shipments from Most Major Suppliers Tumble

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 5.43 billion square meter equivalents in November, down 9.8 percent from October but up 5.5 percent from November 2016. Textile imports totaled 3.33 billion SME, down 5.4 percent for the month but up 7.6 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.09 billion SME were down 16.4 percent from November but up 2.2 percent from a year before.

Overall Imports. Total year-to-date imports were 59.9 billion SME, up 3.2 percent from the previous year, as textile imports gained 4.7 percent to 34.7 billion SME and apparel imports rose 1.1 percent to 25.2 billion SME.

For the year ending in November imports were 64.7 billion SME, up 3.1 percent from a year earlier, as textile imports increased 4.8 percent to 37.5 billion SME but apparel imports lost 0.9 percent to 27.2 billion SME.
