Textile and Apparel Imports Fall in September; Honduras, El Salvador, Turkey See Big Drops

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 5.93 billion square meter equivalents in September, down 2.8 percent from August but up 8.3 percent from September 2016. Textile imports totaled 3.35 billion SME, down 1.5 percent for the month but up 13.6 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.58 billion SME were down 4.4 percent from September but up 2.1 percent from a year before.

Overall Imports. Total year-to-date imports were 48.5 billion SME, up 2.7 percent from the previous year, as textile imports gained 4.0 percent to 27.9 billion SME and apparel imports rose 1.1 percent to 20.6 billion SME.

For the year ending in September imports were 64.1 billion SME, up 3.0 percent from a year earlier, as textile imports increased 4.5 percent to 37.0 billion SME and apparel imports gained 1.0 percent to 27.1 billion SME.
