The Food and Drug Administration has extended from June 2 to Aug. 1 the period for public comments on a proposed rule that would update the “Nutrition Facts” label for packaged foods to reflect new public health and scientific information, update serving size requirements to better align with how much people really eat, and highlight key elements such as calories and serving sizes. The proposed changes would affect all packaged foods except certain meat, poultry and processed egg products, which are regulated by the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
