Jewelry Guides Changes to be Subject of June 19 FTC Roundtable

Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg Trade Report

The Federal Trade Commission will host a public roundtable June 19 in Washington, D.C., to examine possible changes to its Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals and Pewter Industries. The Jewelry Guides explain to businesses how to avoid making deceptive claims about precious metal, pewter, diamond, gemstone and pearl products.

This roundtable will address two issues in particular: whether and how the Guides should provide particular guidance on how to describe non-deceptively any content of alloy products containing precious metals in amounts below the Guides’ minimum thresholds, and how to prevent consumer deception with respect to jewelry industry products with only a surface-layer application of precious metals. The FTC is seeking no later than June 5 comments on a number of specific questions concerning these issues.
