DEA to Restrict Imports and Exports of Synthetic Substance

The Drug Enforcement Administration has announced its intent to issue an order temporarily including the synthetic cathinone N-1-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-2-(ethylamino)-1-pentanone (N-ethylpentylone, ephylone) into schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.

The temporary scheduling order will impose the regulatory requirements under the CSA on the importation, exportation, manufacture, distribution, reverse distribution, possession, research and conduct of instructional activities, and chemical analysis of this substance as well as the administrative, civil, and criminal penalties that apply to persons who fail to comply with such requirements or otherwise violate the CSA with respect to this substance. This order will be effective no earlier than July 13 and remain in effect for two years, with a possible extension of one year.
