DEA to Restrict Imports and Exports of Fentanyl-Related Substance

The Drug Enforcement Administration has announced its intent to issue an order temporarily including the synthetic opioid cyclopropyl fentanyl (N-(1-phenethylpiperidin-4-yl)-N-phenylcyclopropanecarboxamide) and its isomers, esters, ethers, salts, and salts of isomers, esters, and ethers into schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.

The temporary scheduling order will impose the administrative, civil, and criminal sanctions and regulatory controls applicable to schedule I substances under the CSA on the importation, exportation, manufacture, distribution, reverse distribution, possession, research and conduct of instructional activities, and chemical analysis of this substance. It is effective Jan. 4 and will remain in effect until Jan. 4, 2020, with a possible extension of one year.
