Energy Labeling Requirements for Some Appliances Updated Under FTC Rule

The Federal Trade Commission has issued a final rule that will update ranges of comparability and unit energy cost figures on EnergyGuide labels for dishwashers, furnaces, room air conditioners, and pool heaters. These scales show the highest and lowest energy costs or energy efficiency ratings of models similar to the labeled product. Manufacturers will have to begin using this new information on product labels as of May 23.

This final rule also sets Oct. 1, 2019, as the compliance date for previously announced changes to EnergyGuide labels for room air conditioners. The FTC had proposed to set this date as Oct. 1, 2018, but commenters said more time was needed because these changes will require manufacturers to completely redesign their packaging.
