MTOs, Carriers Working to Mitigate COVID-19 Impacts
In March the Federal Maritime Commission formed supply chain innovation teams as part of an initiative to address port congestion and related challenges in the U.S. freight delivery system related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The FMC reported recently that one of the early findings of these teams is that marine terminal operators will be better able to manage cargo flows if shippers identify (1) shipments that contain personal protective equipment (as these shipments must move first and MTOs need to know which containers to prioritize), (2) containers that shippers want to accept and can be prepared to be picked up, and (3) containers that shippers are not able to accept or pick up.
In addition, senior U.S.-based executives for each container shipping company involved in a carrier alliance have committed in discussions with the FMC to working with their MTOs to eliminate or change practices that undermine supply chain performance at this time. They have also committed to examining their own processes and procedures to identify what improvements they can make.
Finally, carriers, MTOs, and port authorities are offering a variety of container storage options for shippers whose supply chains have been disrupted. The FMC said this is “just one example of how supply chain participants can move quickly to address trends before they become problematic.”
OTI License Applications
