U.S. and Canada Conduct Week-Long Import Safety Exercise
U.S. Customs and Border Protection on July 21 announced that U.S. and Canadian officials recently conducted a week-long joint “table top exercise” on handling import safety issues through multi-agency collaboration. A CBP press release indicates that the exercise allowed officials from CBP’s Commercial Targeting and Analysis Center, the Canada Border Services Agency, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada to focus on critical incidents involving imported products that were found to be dangerous, hazardous and volatile.
The exercise helped both countries understand how the other would respond to a critical incident and gave each participating agency a chance to present potential scenarios of import safety events that would have hazardous effects on the public. As scenarios were presented, each agency provided feedback to their respective counterparts. This feedback will now be used to better protect U.S. and Canadian consumers.
