Trump Looks to Boost Trade Cooperation with Brazil Under New Leader
President Trump said recently that the U.S. and Brazil will “work closely together on trade” under Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro. Brazil is one of the few trading partners with which the U.S. runs a trade surplus.
There is some speculation that the two like-minded leaders could decide to pursue a bilateral trade agreement, but the prospects of such an outcome are uncertain. On the one hand, Bolsonaro is said to be interested in withdrawing from, or revising the rules of, the Mercosur trade bloc so Brazil could pursue its own trade deals with other countries. On the other hand, Bolsonaro’s top priorities are expected to be domestic issues and the U.S. and Brazil are competitors in key world markets.
