U.S. Customs and Border Protection has long utilized the focused assessment as the primary tool to audit importers. In recent years, however, CBP has conducted more single issue audits and audit surveys and fewer FAs. Regardless of the type, however, these audits have a significant impact on your import department and what is required if your company is selected to participate. Mary Cagle is an Auditor for Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, P.A., residing in Charlotte, N.C. Ms. Cagle represents clients undergoing customs audits, conducts compliance reviews, and performs mock audits of importers to determine if they have systems in place to produce compliant transactions and to identify potential savings opportunities. She works with clients to remedy valuation concerns (e.g., with respect to related party transactions or utilization of alternate bases of appraisement), quantify prior disclosures by utilizing statistical sampling and other creative methods, and draft and update compliance manuals. She also conducts compliance reviews and creates compliance manuals for customs brokerage firms.
