USTR Seeking Requests to Accelerate Tariff Cuts, Modify Origin Rules in Chile FTA
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative is soliciting proposals to accelerate tariff cuts and liberalize the rules of origin under the U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement. Proposals must be submitted no later Aug. 6.

USTR states that in considering whether to accelerate the elimination of tariffs or make further changes to the FTA’s rules of origin the following factors will be taken into account: the extent to which any such changes may reduce transaction and manufacturing costs or increase trade between Chile and the U.S., the feasibility of devising, implementing and monitoring modified rules of origin, and the level and breadth of interest that manufacturers, processors, traders and consumers in the U.S. and Chile express for particular changes. Only those changes that are broadly supported by stakeholders in both countries are expected to be made.

The U.S. and Chile have already completed one set of accelerated tariff cuts, which took effect Jan. 1, 2009. Earlier this year the two sides reached agreement on proposed changes to the FTA rules of origin, but those changes have not yet been implemented.
