FTC Proposes to Require EnergyGuide Labels on TVs
The Federal Trade Commission has issued a proposed rule that would require EnergyGuide labels to appear on televisions sold in the U.S. The FTC is seeking comments by May 14 on the need for these labels; how the energy usage of TVs should be determined; the location, format and content of energy disclosures; and the timing of the proposed labeling requirements.
Yellow-and-black EnergyGuide labels are currently required on many consumer appliances, such as washing machines and refrigerators, and provide information such as the estimated yearly cost of operating the appliance and the cost range compared to other similar models. Last March the FTC solicited comments on whether these labels should be required on a range of consumer electronic products, including TVs. The FTC states that it is not proposing labeling requirements for other consumer electronics at this time but is seeking further comment on test procedures and other issues.
