DOT Report Shows Gain in Surface Trade with Canada and Mexico
The Department of Transportation reports that U.S. surface transportation trade in goods with NAFTA partners Canada and Mexico rose 6.5% to $51.1 billion in March after declining sharply in each of the previous four months. However, this figure represents a 27.9% drop from March 2008, the third month in a row with a year-on-year decline of more than 27%. Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline and accounts for about 88 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico.
Surface trade between the U.S. and Canada totaled $31.0 billion in March, down 34.2% from March 2008. Exports by truck fell 25.1% by value while imports by truck declined 26.8%. U.S.-Mexico surface transportation trade totaled $20.0 billion, down 15.1% from a year before. Exports by truck dropped 6.4% by value while imports by truck fell 15.5%.
According to the DOT, the value of U.S. surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in March was down 9.3% compared to March 2004 but up 17.4% from March 1999, including a 24.3% increase for exports and an 11.9% rise for imports.
